Marin Girls Chorus (MGC) is the oldest children's chorus in Marin and is dedicated exclusively to girls. Founded in 1988 by Martha Wall, MGC has grown into a dynamic group of girls, in grades 1 - 10, from all over Marin County.
MGC teaches the art of choral singing by freeing the child's natural voice and finding the clear tone within each singer. Children blossom at their own pace and discover their personal musical talents and tastes by learning songs from many sources.
Four levels of classes are offered to suit all ages and abilities. Music theory, note reading, voice training, and ear training are an integral part of the weekly classes. Choristers are also introduced to rhythm and percussion instruments as part of their music instruction.
Choristers acquire music skills in a joyful and energizing atmosphere. By allowing children to be themselves, dosing the rehearsal with emotional honesty and humor, and incorporating playfulness with games and dances, the director makes rehearsal so much fun that singers engage with the learning in a meaningful way.
In order to engage the whole child within whole community, MGC performs throughout the school year at community events, retirement homes, holiday festivals, schools, and civic organizations. Some concerts are given jointly with other performers and San Francisco Bay Area children's choirs, such as Pacific Boychoir, and with children's choirs from around the world. Our concerts enliven and enrich both our singers and our community.
Singers gain confidence by performing in front of an audience, within the security of a large group. Our performances reflect not only solid musical skills, but also the choristers' sincere enjoyment of the music. The chorus engages the audience by imparting the freshness and vigor of the singers' own experience on stage. The result is beauty enhanced by depth of feeling.
Marin Girls Chorus imparts the true art of choral singing, which, once learned, brings a lifetime of enjoyment.
